summary:
In his new, autobiographical Choice & Chance, Eberhard Blum presents illustrated accounts of his life as an active musician, a life that has ever postulated and demonstrated the close proximity of the musical and visual arts. Until leaving the stage in 2001, he influenced contemporary performance practice as the interpreter of new and experimental instrumental and vocal works by the power and precision of his playing as well as through the earnest workmanship of his chamber musical commitment. The composer Morton Feldman’s late, long trios would, no doubt, never have been developed around, and variously scored for, the gamut of his flutes from piccolo to bass, nor would these pieces have durations of up to and exceeding four hours without Blum's expertly sober expressivity and indefatigable stamina as a soloist. The bravura of his interpretation of the creative polymath Kurt Schwitters’s Ursonate relies as much on his musical understanding and vocal articulation as it does on the integrity of his full-bodied involvement with and illustration of the piece’s sonata form. Today, in his own work as a visual artist, the sheer physicality and unbridled energy of his body language, which once served the production of sound, continues to manifest itself in countless graphic works born of gestures that Blum identifies as originating in the process of writing.
